At about 9am on Tuesday, the owner of a large cattle farm at Cross Creek Rd, Black Creek, Kendall discovered one of his Santa Gertrudis steers had gained access to the house yard and fallen through the top of the septic tank.
The owner and his wife placed a rope around the steer’s neck to hold its head above the sludge level and prevent it from drowning.
A neighbour has assisted in the rescue while emergency services were called.
A front end loader tractor was used to dig around the tank and break part of the side concrete wall. Both the neighbour and owner attempted to rescue the animal until they reached exhaustion and called triple-0.
Police responded and a rescue was activated.
NSW Fire Rescue supported by the Rural Fire Service managed to utilise the owner’s tractor to raise the steer from the tank. The rescue took about one hour to complete.
The condition of the steer is still to be determined.
