It was reported in the Courier in August 1998 three time Australian champion Ian Bell of North Haven took out first place in the Old Mal division of the Mal Muster.
The Mal Muster is the annual competition conducted by local long board club the Mal de Mers with surfers travelling from all over NSW and even interstate to compete.
Ian was a finalist in the nine foot division.
The Mal Muster was an ideal warm up for the Australian titles in South Australia, where Ian was set to travel in October to compete in the nine and eight foot events.
