Council’s Recreation and Buildings group manger Liam Bulley said investigation works at the location started on Tuesday, September 4.
The investigation was prompted by the Camden Haven District Sport & Recreation Management Committee and undertaken by council staff and a contractor.
Committee member Jarryd Gaskin said the investigation was sparked by increasing frustration at the cancellation of sports games at the field.
The purpose of the investigation was for council to garner a better understanding of the site’s hydrology.
“This field is particularly impacted by field closures,” Mr Bulley said.
“Previous attempts to install traditional sports field sub-surface drainage were unsuccessful due to the range of random items, such as old car bodies, that were used to fill the site many years ago.”
The investigation involved digging holes in areas of the field that are known to be more affected by water.
Mr Bulley said there is now anecdotal evidence suggesting natural springs are the cause of the drainage issue.
“Now armed with a better understanding of underground conditions, staff will consider design options to address the issue,” he said.
Timing for implementation of drainage improvements is not known and subject to finalisation of designs and available funding.
