The internationally recognised initiative encourages patrons to ask for help if they were getting unwanted attention or felt their safety is at risk.
It’s a modern approach to a modern issue. By asking for Angela, a patron can subtly alert staff who can intervene by calling police, organising safe transport home or referring the patron to support services.
Having the ‘Ask for Angela’ posters and other advertising displayed prominently throughout a venue can also help to deter unwanted behaviour and increase awareness that venue staff are available to help when needed.
I applaud the work of the Port Macquarie Liquor Accord and the Australian Hotels Association and congratulate them for launching this initiative in our area.
The initiative has already been launched in Albury, Wagga Wagga, Orange, Bathurst, Byron Bay, Manning, Goulburn, Yass, Southern Highlands and City of Sydney.
$4 million surf club fund opens
Local surf life saving clubs can now apply for funding for infrastructure improvements as part of the $4 million state-wide boost to surf club facilities funding.
Surf life saving clubs are the home base for thousands of volunteer lifesavers patrolling our beaches, allowing all age groups to learn about and contribute to water safety.
We rely on the skill and passion of volunteer surf lifesavers to provide this service and this vital injection of funding will ensure they have the support they need to do their important work.
More than $28 million in funding had been allocated in the past decade to make club facilities across NSW safer, accessible and secure.
From nippers to senior patrollers, members of surf life saving clubs provide an amazing service to the people of NSW. Applications close October 5, 2018.
