In September, 2007 a young male humpback whale washed up on South Beach, Dunbogan.
“The whale, spotted by morning walkers, was in ankle-deep water near the four-wheel-drive access track,” it was reported.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Mandy Smith estimated the whale to be around two weeks old.
“The umbilical cord had not properly healed,” she said.
“We are not sure if the whale died at sea and was washed up or died on the shore.”
“There looked to be some deep scratches and bruising under the pectoral fin.
“We can only speculate as to what happened.
“There was no sign the injuries were caused by a predator.”
Ms Smith said an autopsy could not be carried out as the rangers did not have the necessary equipment and on surveying, the whale had to be buried quickly.
