At the Lake Cathie RFS headquarters, a number of families enjoyed learning more about bushfire season while getting an insight into how to complete their bushfire survival plans.
A number of new recruits also attended Saturday morning’s event, and manned the barbeque for much of the morning.
At the North Shore, brigade members were extremely happy with the response from their community.
“We’ve handed out about 100 bushfire survival plan brochures while we've also been discussing membership with about half a dozen people,” brigade captain Kingsley Searle said.
“There is certainly heightened awareness (of the bushfire threat) following the Big Hill fire that threatened the community.
“We had an aerial map showing just how close the Big Hill fire came to the village, and that was a real eye-opener for many.
“Other residents wanted information on how best to fire proof their property too.”
Sancrox/Thrumster Rural Fire Brigade members also did their bit to boost awareness.
Deputy captain James Turner said the event was about raising awareness for people to have a bushfire survival plan.
The Get Ready Weekend was also an opportunity for families to get to know their local firefighters and find out about the fire risk in their area.
