Wauchope Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club members have achieved highly during competition in the prestigious Iron Man event The Coolangatta Gold.

The short course race on October 6 consists of a 10.5 kilometre ski paddle, 2km swim, 3km board finishing in a 5.5km run.

Three teams entered the course and all three came away with gold medals. 

Wauchope Bonny Hills - Expressway Spares won first place in the 140 plus masters male event. Team members included Paul Hoole, Matt O'Garey, Jeremy Bate and Martin Brazel. 

Club spokesperson John Sargeant said Paul Hoole is a life member of the club, and this was his first medal for his fourth attempt. 

The Wauchope Bonny Hills - Anderson Sheet Metal team also won gold in the 140 plus mixed masters. The team was made up of Brett Anderson, Fran Wallace, Paul Mason and Matt Less

The Wauchope Bonny Hills -Hasting Specialty Furniture won gold to defend their 2017 title in the masters female 190 plus event. Members included Elaine Walker, Caroline Turnham, Briony Spencer and Christine Lalor.

Chase Anderson also raced in the under 19 male event and came in 23rd place.

The long course on October 7 consisted of a gruelling 23km ski paddle from Coolangatta to Miami, 2.1km run to Burleigh, 3.5km swim to Currumbin, 6.1km board paddle and finishes with a 7.1km run back to Coolangatta.

“Jessie Willsher (19-years-old) competed in the elite female event,” John said. 

“Jessie joined Wauchope Bonny Hills SLSC after moving from Western Australia, to commence her paramedic training.

“Jessie finished the 41.8 km event in 10th place, which was an outstanding effort from a young lady up against the best athletes the sport has.”

Wauchope Bonny Hills-First National North Haven team came second in the under 19s male team event.

“They also posted the sixth fastest time for the whole day,” John said. 

Members included Hugh Stewart, Finn Askew, Will Jones and Max Milligan.

The Wauchope Bonny Hills- Pacific Survey team aced the 140 male masters event. Members included Trent Seale, Jeremy Bate, Paul Kurnell and Martin Brazel.

“They came third racing against against teams who had current Olympians racing in them,” John said. 

Wauchope Bonny Hills-Sundial Dental attempted to defend their 2017 title and back up from Saturday’s victory.

John said they came third in the 190 plus female masters event, after having a hard day on the course.

Reeve Anderson and Blake Ellis raced in a youth event on Sunday.

John thanked all the support crews and managers, who supported the athletes during the events.
