They start this week in the same fashion they do every year for thousands of year 12 students – a two hour and ten minute English standard test.

Part two of the English exam follows on Friday before another three weeks of tests, commencing October 22.

Port Macquarie students like Jodie Hancock, Nathan Barnett and Blake Elliot are well-prepared and, despite the often stressful time, are ready.

Among the subjects the Hastings Secondary College trio are studying between them are: general two maths, biology, legal studies, business studies, ancient history, hospitality, advanced mathematics and physics.

“At the moment I'm trying to go over my notes and doing a lot of prep work for the exams. I'm very confident,” Jodie said. 

“To combat the stressful times I find it's just a matter of making sure I'm entirely prepared on the day. It's taken me the better part of year 12 to find the balances on what amount of times I should spend on things. 

“Doing two to three hours a night on school, making time for family and friends, for work and for cadets is a very fine line but I think finding that balance and not overworking yourself is the biggest tip."

Nathan agreed.

“Getting your notes ready so it doesn't come as a big surprise for the last week of study is a big help,” he said.

“Every student learns and studies differently, but I have outlets myself. I do air force cadets which is how I get rid of the stress. I go in and enjoy that and then afterwards I have a clear mind to study." 

He is hoping to head straight to university in 2019 where he hopes to study a Bachelor of Education to become a high school teacher.

Jodie will take a gap year and work, while Blake has his sights set on tertiary study.

“I'm hoping to study physiotherapy at CSU in Port Macquaire, which has been a goal of mine the past few years,” he said.

"It's a bit tricky to organise six exams in two weeks. It's hard to manage but I've been doing practice exams and getting a feel for what the questions will be like.

“I'm really strict with my time management. You can get lost studying subjects you like rather than on subjects you need help with.

“You have to relax and spend time with your mates, and ensure you get into good sleep habits."
