On October 26 ‘Award for proud young Aussie’ was the headline of the front page story.
“North Haven Public School student Oliver Shermacher will travel to Government House in Sydney on November 7 to receive an award from Her Excellency the Governor of NSW, Professor Marie Bashir,” it was reported.
“Oliver’s entry in Australia My Country won him first prize in Section 1 of the statewide competition.
“His winning essay was titled ‘Why I’m proud to be an Australian’.
“Oliver’s success was announced at a presentation day for local schools.
“Australia My Country local coordinator Eileen Hanley said one of the most important days on the RSL calendar is the day when prizes are presented to the winner of the Australia My Country competition.
“It is the day when the RSL can say ‘Thank You’ to the principals, teachers and students of the three primary schools in the area.”
