The competition is on November 2 and Brock will soon go letter-to-letter against 49 other participants from across the state.
The news comes after Brock’s success at the regional final in Forster on Tuesday, September 4.
Brock’s teacher Nicole Menzies said she and the school were very proud.
“He’s been working on this goal to make it to the state finals for the past three years,” she said.
“Brock has always been a very talented speller.”
Brock said he isn’t nervous, just excited about being able to compete in the state competition.
Mrs Menzies has been working with Brock on his personal learning goals.
“Spelling is Brock’s passion,” she said.
“I’ve been helping him to maintain his focus.”
Brock has also been working on extending his vocabulary.
“It’s one thing to be able to spell, it’s another to be able to use the words in appropriate context,” Mrs Menzies said.
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams sent Brock a letter of recognition to congratulate him.
“You are a terrific role model to other aspiring young achievers and I would like to wish you all the very best for the state finals in November,” she said.
Academic excellence for spelling is a trait which runs in the family, as Brock’s older brother Zane has also experienced success at bees.
Brock enjoys reading the atlas and encyclopedias, where he can educate himself on facts about the world.
The 2018 Spelling Bee has involved 170,000 students from almost 1000 public schools in NSW.
This was an increase of 20,000 students and 120 schools on the 2017 challenge.
In 2018 the NSW Department of Education hosted a record 50 regional finals, four of which were in rural NSW.
