As part of the action on January 26 in Port Macquarie, the club will be hosting esteemed valuers Tom Thompson and Alex Renwick for public appraisals and discussions on local historical and interesting pieces.
In Port Macquarie for preliminary appraisals on October 16-18, Tom Thompson said he was very excited to be included in the showcase.
“I have been in Port Macquarie for the last few days talking to locals and having a look at different pieces to get a feel for the kinds of items people might have stored away,” Mr Thompson said.
“We are looking for pieces that have significant historical importance but also pieces that are unique and tell a story – whether that be for a family or the local area.
“So far we have been having some great discussions and have unearthed some great finds – and this is just the beginning of the process.”
Mr Thompson is a publisher of Australian literature and history, who represents the estates of Arthur Upfield and Mary Gilmore.
He was publisher for the Australian Bicentennial Authority, and publisher of Literature at Angus & Robertson before acquiring a major part of the A & R backlist in 1996.
He also has a long experience of working with Australian artists, producing books on Martin Sharp, Lloyd Rees, Brett Whiteley, and several books with Garry Shead, whose portrait of him won the 1993 Archibald Prize.
Mr Thompson said he wanted to hear from as many people as he can.
“We are encouraging anyone in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region who might have some great pieces in their homes to get in touch with us so they and their stories can be included in our showcase,” he said.
“What people need to do is make contact the Tacking Point Lions Club and we can start having discussions so that our showcase at the end of January will be exciting and interesting for people.
“On the day we will be having live appraisals as well as displays for people to look at.”
