The disappointing match comes after the Lawyers started the season with two competent wins.
The top half of the first innings started well when both Mel Hunt and Chrissie Andrews recorded safe hits. However three strike outs left the Local Lawyers scoreless.
The bottom half of the first also looked promising when the Enduros’ batters hit to shortstop, only to see the local Lawyers captain Georgia Boland cleanly pick up the hard hit ball and fire it to Amanda Badger on first base.
This was followed by an easy fly ball to centre field, where unfortunately a misread of the ball in the air caused an error with the ball dropping to the ground. This allowed the Enduros’ Lea Smith to put down an excellent sacrifice bunt. From here the Enduros bats came alive and they finished the innings with 8 safe hits and 8 runs on the score sheet.
This set the tone for the rest of the game. The next 5 innings produced 5 safe hits by the Lawyers, but they were unable to turn these good hits into runs. On the other hand, the Enduros’ batters hit 22 safe hits scoring another 23 runs. The final score was very disappointing for the Local Lawyers as this result did not reflect the potential of the team.
Highlights of the game came from the Local Lawyers’ two youngest players. Lily Andrews finished the day with two safe hits from two times at bat, while Nat Middleton put in a never give up effort as catcher. The game also produced one of the finest outfield catches ever seen in Port Macquarie, when Angela Best dived and slid in on her knees to rob Chrissie Andrews of what appeared to be a safe hit.
For the Local Lawyers it is time to reflect on ‘how do we turn hits into runs?’ Training on Thursday will concentrate on hitting practice and the start of developing some new fastball pitchers. Pitch coaching will start at 4:30pm.
