On October 1, 1997 it was reported in the Camden Haven Courier that a landmark in Laurieton’s main street had been ‘given the chop’, after 18 months of debate about its future.
“A large London plane tree in the grounds of Laurieton Public School was removed on Monday following complaints from the Uniting Church council,” it was reported.
“It is understood the church council was to instigate legal action if the tree was not removed, claiming leaves were blocking the guttering of the church building and branches were encroaching too far on to its property.
“According to Hastings Council horticultural officer for the Camden Haven area, Mr Steve Chant, a permit was issued for the tree’s removal after an application from the school.”
