Surfers of varying ages with different disabilities took to the surf with the help of many selfless volunteers to enjoy the thrill of the ocean and catching a wave into shore.

Disabled Surfers Association was established in 1986 by Gary Blaschke after a motorcycle accident in which he lost his knee cap and under went extensive rehabilitation.

Gary saw a void that needed to be filled, as over the years many surfers with disabilities have had no one to help them get back into the water. Many suffer from disabilities that the general public would not consider a disability.

The Hastings branch was originally established after the DSA visited Port Macquarie as part of the ‘Little Ray of Sunshine Tour’ in 2001. In 2011 saw the rebirth of the branch with a new committee that plans their seasons.

A carer for one of the surfers said seeing the joy on everyone’s faces as they rode in on a wave brought a tear to the eye.

“It is just so humbling and so amazing to see how happy they are when they catch a wave,” they said.

“We have been attending for some time and each time the joy and happiness is overwhelming. I always cry when I watch them.”
