Our community has many unsung heroes who dedicate so much of their time to help others while asking very little in return. If you know someone who deserves recognition and want to help celebrate their contribution, nominate them for a 2019 Port Macquarie-Hastings Australia Day Award. The award categories include the Young Citizen, Citizen, Senior Citizen and Community Group. Nominations close November 30, and can be submitted at pmhc.nsw.gov.au/australiaday.

On Friday, our sporting community celebrated the success of our up-and-coming sportsmen and women at the 2018 Port Macquarie-Hastings Sports Awards. I was proud to announce Annika Toohey, Port Macquarie’s hockey rising star, as this year’s Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship recipient, and cricketer Connor Cook as runner-up.
Fundraising for the scholarship through the Mayor’s Sporting Fund gives these two inspiring young people a financial boost to help them reach their sporting goals. A big thanks to Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise for encouraging participation in sport across the region. I urge anyone in sports, or who wants the see our young sports people achieve their dreams, to take part in any upcoming events, such as the 20th Annual Mayor’s Sporting Fund Eagle Insurance Brokers Golf Day on Friday, November 23.
