Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club held their third day of nippers for the season, but it was the first time members went in the water.

Club junior activities chairperson Sandra Slattery said Askew was impressive in the run, swim, board challenge.

“That’s the first time we’ve held that,” she said.

“It was to encourage a good culture through the club and to help patrolling members and water safety people improve their fitness and skills.”

Slattery said club member numbers in the junior age divisions had swelled from 115 last year to 190 so far this season.

“They’re still growing,” she said.

“We’re having a huge increase mainly due to the fact we’ve got a committee working together along with family members.

“We have a lot of support coming in and it’s all about encouragement and being one big family.”

Tacking Point invited sister club Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving club to attend the day.

“It’s not all about being competitive, but we want our kids to get in and enjoy the water,” Slattery said.

“We had one-on-one water safety so the kids felt safe in the environment because for some of them it was their first swim.”

The nippers day is on every Sunday and runs until the end of March.
