In a day designed to give the teenagers an option to play the sport at a school level, Heritage starred in the under-15 division.
Wauchope and Hastings Secondary College Port Macquarie Campus battled it out in the open division.
Organiser Pete Roberts has been playing basketball “on and off” for the last couple of years and after two previously unsuccessful attempts at starting a competition, it was third time lucky.
“Generally there are low numbers of girls playing in competitions,” he said.
“If they aren’t playing in representative teams or socially, they only have one competition each year they can play in so I wanted to try and get it going with some of the schools.”
Seven schools – including Wauchope, Camden Haven, Chatham, Melville, Newman, Heritage and Hastings Secondary College all fielded teams.
“It’s mainly about creating an opportunity for the girls,” Roberts said.
“We wanted to give them something for between years seven and 12.”
In the round-robin format each team played at least three games while some played four.
“It wasn’t a knockout format so each team played more than the two they would have previously.”
Roberts was hopeful another competition could be held in National Women’s Week from March 3-9.
