The Local Traffic Committee met on October 31 and reached consensus that a ‘pedestrian (zebra) crossing’  be installed at Bold Street, Laurieton, between Tunis Street and Seymour Street.

Eight councillors unanimously passed the recommendation at the ordinary council meeting. 

Cr Peter Alley said the crossing is certainly needed within the Camden Haven and more specifically the Laurieton community.

Under the recommendation’s executive summary it stated ‘there is a clear need for a pedestrian crossing midway between Tunis and Seymour Streets’. 

“Council has received a number of requests from the community, including the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce, to install a pedestrian crossing at this location,” the council business paper stated. 

“The frequency of these requests has increased since the opening of a new pharmacy in 2018 on the eastern side of Bold Street, which generates significant pedestrian traffic across the road to the supermarket on the western side.”

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is planning to start the works in May 2019. 

However, the Camden Haven Chamber of Commerce says it will continue to "be forceful" with council in bringing the start date for the works forward.

Chamber president Sue East says a recent major accident in the area should not be repeated.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council applied for funding for the implementation of the crossing and the grant was approved through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund in March.

Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the $347,000 mid-block zebra pedestrian crossing will include kerb extensions and additional street lights, modification of parking layout, taxi stand, bus stop and loading zones.
