Recent games have indicated that these two teams are evenly matched.
The Local Lawyers took to the field and lead-off batter Mel Hunt reached first base on a safe hit. Things looked good when Jordan Grieve took a pitch and Hunt set off to steal second base.
The Lawyers had not anticipated the strength and accuracy of the Lakers new catcher Catherine Carroll. Carroll took the pitch and in one single motion threw Hunt out by at least two metres. This one play rattled the Lawyers baserunners and during the rest of the game the lawyers were unable to steal any bases.
The Lawyers first three batters were unable to score any runs. The Lakers were able to score one run and with the score at 1/0 the game was on a knife’s edge. The Lawyers failed to score in the second and third innings due to excellent fielding by the Lakers. The Lakers scored three runs in the second innings and then scored seven runs in the third innings This was in no way the fault of the Lawyers pitcher Chrissie Andrews who kept on throwing strikes and varying her pitches. Injuries had left the Lawyers short one outfielder and this combined with some inexperience in the other outfield positions allowed the Lakers to take complete control of the game.
Some highlights for the Lawyers included a literally cracking catch by shortstop Georgia Boland. Boland leaped into the air and the crack of her glove as she intercepted the line drive could be heard throughout the whole diamond. Jordan Grieve was involved in three outs from third base and the left hand side of the diamond completed eight of the 12 outs made by the Lawyers.
It was ironic that the only outfield catch made by the Lawyers was made by Chrissie Andrews, after she allowed a young pitcher to gain experience in the pitching circle.
Despite having a solid batting line-up, the Lawyers managed only three safe hits and one walk from their 22 times at bat in their worst batting performance this season. The one exception was the Lawyers run scorer Fiona Ewan.
The final score ended up a very convincing win to the Lakers 21/1.
Lawyers coach Tom said the team was outclassed today and didn’t have the experience to use the bunt more.
“The injuries finally caught up with us today but we desperately need to deepen our pitching stocks,” he said.
The Lawyers will now have a holiday break and return to the Diamond on February 2 when they will take on the powerful Phoenix.
