Recently a dolphin, named Grandma by ORRCA, was found stranded on a sand spit at Queens Lake by resident Phillip English, his son and grandson.  

Phillip’s son Andrew helped the dolphin into deeper water where it eventually swam away. 

A spokesperson from ORRCA Jools Farrell said more strandings are possible, as the entrance to the lake is now blocked at low tide.

“Even a small boat cannot get through, with the only entrance around the back of Goats Island,” she said. 

ORRCA wants the community to be on the look out for any dolphins which appear to be in distress in the lake. 

“If you do find a dolphin please do not attempt to relocate or touch the dolphin, especially the skin which may be sunburnt,” Jools said.

“The main thing to do is keep the dolphin hydrated with buckets of water.

“Make sure no water goes into the blow hole which is located on the top of the dolphin’s head.

“Also try to keep as calm as possible so the dolphin doesn’t get stressed.”

If people do come across a stranded animal they should call the ORRCA Rescue Line on 9415 3333. The line is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

ORRCA is the only rescue group licensed to rescue dolphins under National Parks and Wildlife in NSW.
