At long last the pattern of never ending nor’ east winds seems to have broken, with a much welcome southerly change coming through earlier this week and reasonable conditions thereafter.

This has certainly been most welcome from an angling perspective, especially with the Golden Lure being held over the last week.
Offshore, those competing in the Golden Lure have been enjoying some terrific action with both blue and black marlin, short-billed spear fish and mahi mahi among the species on offer. Hopefully today’s final competition day will see a continuation of these great results.
Also offshore, Pat from Fish Port Macquarie charters reports there have been some nice snapper and pearl perch in around 50 metres despite the pocket of cool water eddying off Port over recent weeks. Hopefully the winds and currents will be favourable over the coming weeks and allow the really warm water to come right in. If so, look for our summer mackerel season to kick off.
Off the beaches, the red weed and cool water have been a hindrance with only a few bream and whiting on Lighthouse and North Beach. There have however been some nice tailor to over 2 kilos on the beaches in the Camden Haven which is a welcome bonus at this time of year.
Off the rocks, Plomer has held a few bream, blackfish and tailor, as has Point Perpendicular and Diamond Head. The rocks off Port Macquarie have been a difficult proposition courtesy of the weed.
In the estuary, action has been reasonable given the cool water and weed in the lower reaches. As usual, star attractions have been the summer staples flathead and whiting with some solid results achieved on both. Flathead numbers have been consistent with fish on offer from around Settlement Point and Blackmans Point, however the better results have been achieved upstream of the Dennis Bridge where the water is warmer and bait fish more prevalent. Blackmans has also been the pick of locations for whiting, however up the Maria and Limeburners have both been worth a look, as to Lake Cathie of course. Those throwing lures in the Hastings have also been scoring some terrific trevally which are always a welcome encounter from a sport fishing perspective.
Off the breakwalls, a few mulloway have been taken on both lures and live baits, along with a sprinkling of nice bream after dark. There have also been plenty of shovel nose rays throughout the Hastings.
Crabs also remain active with muddies upstream and blue swimmers in the back channel.
Until next time, tight lines and good fishing to all.
