Ten members have recently gained their Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion, under the guidance of training officer and club president, Michelle Garvan.
Noah Traves, Thomas Worton, Jesse Bell, William Hosick, Charlotte Miller and Erin Gunton all recently gained their Surf Rescue Certificate.
Rachel Hosick, Brieanna Rumsby and Jorja Miller gained their Bronze Medallion.
Jesse Bell is one of the junior members who will travel with the group.
He said he learnt a lot about medical assistance, including how to operate a defibrillator and apply an epipen.
Michelle has taught Jesse swimming at Laurieton pool and said it’s wonderful to be able to witness his development through surf too.
Jesse’s dad Ian said his son was a ‘bit of a water baby’ and was proud that he had now achieved his Surf Rescue Certificate.
“He’s a great swimmer in the pool but it’s important to learn how to be safe in the surf too,” he said.
Ian also did surf life saving when he was a kid and said his parents were also involved.
Michelle said Jesse’s qualifications with the club will advance his future career prospects, as employers look favourably upon those involved in surf life saving.
In 2018 club members from the Camden Haven Surf Life Saving Club went to Dee Why in Sydney.
Michelle said juniors from the club were integral in helping to locate a woman who went missing on the beach.
Michelle said Sydney beaches may be busier, but mostly the same issues also apply to beaches in the Camden Haven.
