Julian’s son Brandon suffered two broken patellas when he was hit by a car on Ocean Drive at Bonny Hills on Wednesday, January 16. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

When Julian received the call about Brandon that morning, he said he went into a state of shock. 

“It’s something that always plays on your mind when you’re a parent, and when I got the call about Brandon I just went numb,” he said. 

Brandon has undergone surgery and his parents hope he will be released from hospital at some point this week. 

“We’ll just have to wait, see how he goes and take it one day at a time,” Julian said. 

In 2018 Brandon Conway won the under-23 road championship state title. However it is a title Julian said he would not be able to defend in 2019, with a long road of rehabilitation ahead of him. 

Julian is urging motorists to take care and be respectful of others on the road. He said incidents involving collisions between cars and cyclists are becoming all too frequent. 

Given the steady rise of the population in the region, Julian said there had been a corresponding increase in traffic.

“Coupled with the increased use of motor vehicles for short trips, there is an increasing sense of urgency amongst drivers,” he said.

“Courtesy has been replaced with impatience.

“This presents an increased risk for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.”

Julian hopes Brandon can use his mental strength and determination to power through his rehabilitation.
