The Lakewood resident said over the past few days she has received phone calls purporting to come from the ‘Do Not Call Register’.
“The caller asks if any unsolicited calls are being received and promises that in future all calls will be blocked,” she said.
“The caller verifies the name and address of the account holder and then seeks billing information in the hope of eliciting banking details.”
Kathy said she is concerned that people might fall prey to the scammer and share their banking details.
“I thought that it is worth making people aware of this latest scam,” she said.
A spokesperson from the Australian Communications and Media Authority said the organisation is aware of the scam.
“The Do Not Call Register operator does not initiate calls to solicit members of the public to register their number on the Do Not Call Register,” she said.
“Never give an unknown caller personal and financial information without first verifying who they are.”
The Do Not Call Register is a free service.
