Bonny Hills resident Susan Bailey has lived in the area for over 20 years and said she was shocked when she saw hundreds of dead urchins.
She said in previous years she’d only come across one or two.
Susan is concerned about other marine life which is also washing ashore.
A spokesperson from NSW Department of Primary Industries said the cause of the sea urchin deaths is currently unclear.
“However it is suspected that this is a natural phenomenon associated with recent weather patterns (persistent north east winds and windswell) which are leading to significant amounts of marine algae and other inshore/rocky reef organisms being washed ashore,” she said.
The spokesperson said it is not common to see hundreds of dead sea urchins and these events happen from time to time due to a variety of factors.
