Nash nails nine records at high school carnival

Nash Wilkes has broken nine swimming records at the Camden Haven High School Senior Swimming Carnival.

The carnival was on Wednesday, February 6 at the Laurieton Pool. Nash entered nine events and broke all nine records, some of which were 22 years old.

The records included the 17-year-old 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 33m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 33m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 66m butterfly, 33m individual medley and 33m freestyle.

Nash’s dad Darren said he was incredibly proud of his son, who has put in the hard work to achieve the fantastic results.

Nash is a new distance education student at Camden Haven High School in 2019. Darren said his son wants to focus on developing his future as a professional athlete.

Darren said it could be another 20 years before someone beats Nash’s records again.

Nash’s best result was the 200m freestyle, where he took 13.46 off the previous record that had stood since 1998.

In the 100m backstroke, Nash took 15.61 seconds off another record that had stood since 2002.

In the 100m breaststroke Nash took 17.42 seconds off the previous record that had stood since 1997.

In the individual medley Nash took 11.81 seconds off the record that had been in place since 2008.

Darren said it was a pretty amazing performance for his son, who had only just joined Camden Haven’s High School Distance Education Program.

“This is a fantastic program that allows Nash to train mornings and afternoons in the pool and work out at his his local gym at Taree,” he said.

Nash thanked the distance education physical education head teacher Shayne Vonbun, school principal Margaret Hutchinson and the distance education staff for their support.

Darren said Nash will now focus on the upcoming zone carnival.

Nash is hoping to make it through to the NSW all schools in May at the Sydney Olympic Pool.

Nash’s family is currently trying to raise funds to help get him the national event in Adelaide.  To make a donation visit the Help Nash Get to Nationals gofundme page
