"Lake Innes is an enormous water body," he said.
"The water which comes in from the ocean isn't enough to reach the system at Port Macquarie."
Mid North Coast residents are being warned about the possibility of severe weather and intense ocean conditions associated with Cyclone Oma, which is forming off the coast of Queensland.
The high tide levels and big swell has caused some water to channel into Lake Cathie.

Bill said it would be great to see a consistent high tide and big swell conditions to maintain the water flow into Lake Cathie.
Bill walked at Lake Cathie on the morning of Friday, February 22 and said there 'was still a bit of a smell to it'.
Port Macquarie residents Kym and John Layton were at Lake Cathie on Friday, February 22 after they heard rumours that it had opened.
"It's not really much of an opening," Kym said.
The couple lived at Lake Cathie for two years before they moved to Port Macquarie.
They said Lake Cathie used to remain open to the ocean for longer periods.
