A handful of Nationals MPs - including Resources Minister Matt Canavan and Barnaby Joyce - have demanded the commonwealth fund a coal project in the northern state before the next election.

"When we talk about a coal-fired power station in Queensland, it's a moot point because (Premier) Annastacia Palaszczuk is not going to build one," Mr Littleproud told reporters in Hobart on Tuesday.

"We have to look at other things that are practical and tactile and can be delivered."

Agreeing on a coalition position on coal projects is the goal of a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, given the diverse range of public statements.

Mr Littleproud says the coalition is technologically agnostic when it comes to energy.

"We want the cheapest and most reliable source to come through," he said.

"The reality is the market should decide."

Coal projects are among the 66 submissions to the government's scheme to underwrite new generation power projects.

Energy Minister Angus Taylor says he won't rush the process.

"We've been working through them meticulously, we've got to get this right," he told Sky News on Monday.

"You can't make mistakes on this stuff, it is too important."
