Ms Burgess represented Sustainable Australia in the state seat of Port Macquarie at the March 23 poll.
She says voters are looking for the middle ground in politics.
"I started it purely to raise the profile and awareness of the party, whose policies I believe in, but as I talked to people about it, I really enjoyed it," Ms Burgess said.
"I feel the party, with the policies we have, is capable of offering a real choice to some of the dissatisfaction I've sensed in a lot of people out there.
"I think a lot of people are looking for something very much more in the middle of politics, rather than the left or the right."
Sustainable Australia is described as an independent party from the common sense political centre, with a positive agenda to secure an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable Australia.
The party's primary focus for the election was better planning, affordable housing, secure jobs and a sustainable environment and population.
Ms Burgess secured 2075 first preference votes on the initial count available as of 11am on March 24.
And she is delighted with those figures.
Ms Burgess believes a longer campaign at the next state election would result in more awareness about the party.
She spent election day handing out how to vote material outside the Lake Cathie Community Centre.
Ms Burgess thanked the party's volunteers in the electorate, noting the dedication of those who did the letter box drops and helped on election day.
The Lake Cathie resident is a dual citizen which rules her out from standing for federal politics.
But she says she will be working for the party in the federal election and she would be very happy to stand again at the state level.
"I think I have found something that may be a bit of a hobby and interest in the coming years," she said.
"Maybe it's the start of a political career, you never know."
Ms Burgess is waiting for the party's upper house results with hopeful anticipation.
