Having been officially employed at the school for 19 of those 20 years, Ted - as he is affectionately known - has seen many students pass through the school's gate on Bold Street during his time.

"I never taught the students anything but they always waved to me as they walked past me on the mower," Ted said.

"I have seen my grandchildren and now my great grandchildren come to Laurieton Public School so it does hold a special place in my heart. 

I have also worked at Camden Haven High, Port Macquarie Public, Kendall Public School and a few others over the years.

"At the moment it is a bit surreal to think I am actually retiring but deep down I know it is time."

At 84 years old, Ted said he is doesn't want to go but the fishing rod is calling his name.

"It will be a sad day when I walk out of the school for the last time tomorrow (Friday) but I know I will be back," he said.

"My great-granddaughter still has a few years left at the school so I absolutely will be back at every opportunity to see her.

"But I think my bowls are calling and I am looking forward to spending some time with my fishing rod out on the water."

Ted said the highlight of his career at the school was watching all the students grow and graduate.

"Graduation is such a special time for the kids and to see them grow up over their time at the school was really special," he said.

"Then at the year of the year they get clapped out to high school and that again is a very special moment. Each year it happen and each year it is so special."
