In the estuary, reasonable numbers of quality flathead are around Rawdon Island, Limeburners and the main channel at Hibbard. Whitebait is the pick of the baits although lure enthusiasts have been doing particularly well. Blackfish numbers remain solid with the south wall giving up a few good fish on cabbage.
Bream are reasonable around Rawdon Island, but look for an improvement in the lower reaches in the coming weeks, if the Hastings ever sees another fresh. The recent full moon produced only a few mulloway from the north wall. Reports from the Camden Haven breaks have been far more encouraging. Up river has been excellent for well conditioned mud crabs, while the weed beds downstream on Blackmans Point have yielded some tasty blue swimmers.
Red weed is still about on the beaches but there are plenty of clear locations. Daytime anglers have been finding a few reasonable bream and whiting on Lighthouse, while North Beach has again held tailor at first light. School mulloway have been elusive with the odd fish taken from around Camden Haven and Crescent Head.
Off the rocks, tailor numbers and quality have picked up with reports of fish over a kilogram taken from Bonny Hills and Diamond Head. Those using small metals have also been scoring plenty of bonito. Land-based game enthusiast are still tangling with consistent numbers of longtail tuna, with fish encountered at Nobbys, Blueface, Grants Head and Point Perpendicular.
Offshore, Geoff from Fish Port Macquarie Charters reports the reef about 50 metres off Port has been fishing well for snapper, pearl perch and the odd pigfish. The sand tracts just wider have also been producing a terrific run of flathead to around 60cm. Wider again, the lack of current has seen some nice bass groper, blue eye trevalla and bar cod taken from the deeper water, but the lack of current has seen the mahi mahi action at the FAD taper significantly.
