Ms Spencer's interest in writing family history was sparked by her own book Still Voices about her father's family.
"It was an absolutely consuming project," Ms Spencer said.
The talk is about writing family history and memoir in a creative and engaging way.
"Often people write non-fiction and they especially their own history and just have a whole heap of facts and throw a few pictures in.
"But it can be written as the telling of the story and it can be done in an artful way."
Ms Spencer has a number of books under her belt.
She is the internationally published author of two works of non-fiction Bushrangers and Strop Struggling.
She also contributed to the classic, Everyone can win.
Rita's talk is on Tuesday May 7 at 10.30am at Port Macquarie library.
