Zynal Javid Khan, of Reservoir, allegedly followed the 22-year-old woman for more than a kilometre in June 2013 after she left Tramp Nightclub.

It's claimed Khan approached the woman and asked if she wanted to go home with him, but she rejected his advances.

He then allegedly physically and sexually attacked the woman, who was heading home to her seven-week-old baby.

The woman was left seriously injured after allegedly being struck over the head, dragged into a laneway, punched, and had a hand wrapped around her throat to prevent her screaming.

Khan applied for bail in January but was refused by magistrate Johanna Metcalf.

She said the offences were "extremely serious" and Khan would serve substantial jail time if convicted.

Melbourne Magistrates Court was previously told there was a lack of forensic DNA linking the accused to the crime, but Ms Metcalf said the prosecution's case could not be labelled weak.

CCTV footage shows a man police say is Khan leaving the scene.

The footage has been released twice, with six people identifying Khan, including two police and his parole officer.

Charges were finally laid in 2018, partly because Khan's sister and then girlfriend who gave alibis have both since been charged with perjury.

Police had also offered a $500,000 reward for information.
