The Middle Rock Mariners Baseball teams travelled to Wauchope to take on the powerful Hastings River Pirates on Sunday, May 26. The Mariners were a little understrength with both Kye and Marty Dures unavailable to take the field. The team tried many combinations and positional changes but failed to stop the Pirates scoring 20 runs in the first three innings.

Slow starts are unfortunately becoming a feature of the Mariners team. They are playing some great baseball but seem anxious at the start of games, leading to them continually playing catch up baseball. Once again it took 4 innings for the team to score their first run.
The Mariners were best served by Brock Colley who hit the ball 3 times to the outfield for 2 safe hits. Safe hits were also recorded by Leigh I'Anson, Todd Reid and Reid Farrell. Cobi Heagney and Max Carpenter gained walks.
In defence the Mariners only made 2 errors but the 4 pitchers gave up a total of 17 safe hits. On the positive side they gave up only one walk.
To their credit the team held their heads high and never stopped giving their best effort. Todd Reid took on a leadership role from first base and did his utmost to keep team spirits high and supported the pitchers with his positive attitude.
The challenge for the team in next week's game is to play well in the early innings of the contest. If they can overcome the nervous starts the team will be in a position to put pressure on the Giants.
The final score of 21/5 was a true reflection of the superiority of the Pirates on the day.
The reserve grade team was also soundly beaten 17/2. With the bat Matt Lindsay, Ray Beaucroft and Tim Moore had safe hits. Lead off pitcher Tim Moore finished with 3 strike outs. New face Paul Beaver picked out a walk and stole 3rd base in an impressive cameo role.
