The first grade game started with the Giants scoring three runs when their star batter Mick Gough slammed a home run over the left field fence.
The Mariners failed to score in the first innings and it looked to the crowd as if the Mariners were off to their usual slow start.
In the second innings the Giants had a little bit of luck when a miss - hit fly ball dropped only centimetres from short stop Brock Colley's reach. For the Mariners, Matt Lenton picked out a base on balls and scored when Max Carpenter had a safe hit to right field. The game slipped away from the Mariners and at the middle of the fifth innings the Giants held a 9/3 lead.
The bottom of the fifth innings was the start of the Mariners' fightback. Safe hits by Brock Colley, Warren Collins and Ben Williams resulted in the Mariners scoring five runs. The top of the sixth started with the Mariners trailing by one run. Lead off batsman Dave Smith smashed the ball to third baseman Tim Harris. Harris gathered the ball metres behind third base and made a superb throw to first base to retire Smith. A second brilliant double play executed by shortstop Brock Colley to Todd Reid on second base and then to first baseman Warren Collins resulted in the Giants scoring no runs.
The final innings saw the Mariners trailing by just one run. Tim Harris had a safe hit to left field and was brought home when Nathan Ellul also had a safe hit to left field. This evened the score at 9/9.
When Todd Reid made first base and then stole third base the Mariners were one base away from their first victory.
Unfortunately for the Mariners Bailey Smith struck out the final Mariners' batsman to leave the score at a very respectable 9 all draw. With the bat it was an impressive team effort with every player making first base at least once. The star with the bat was Warren Collins with two safe hits.
In the field, catcher Max Carpenter was brilliant behind the plate while Matt Lenton and Tim Harris kept the Mariners in the game with fast accurate pitching. However, it was the two fantastic double plays by Colley, Reid and Collins that brought the crowd to their feet.
The reserve grade team went down 30/8 despite a big effort in the last two innings when they scored six runs. Paul Beaver continues to improve and retired the lead runner at second base in a convincing force out. Lisa Cunningham took two outfield catches in right field. Mick Prosser hit the ball to the outfield on three occasions but was unlucky to only record one safe hit.
Next weekend there will be no baseball due to teams representing Port Macquarie at the Tamworth Carnival.
