Mid North Coast Karate students compete at Australian National Championships

Students representing Mid North Coast Karate located at Kew recently travelled to Sydney to compete in the Goshin Ryu Karate Australian National Championships.

Students competed in both Kata and Sparring events at the National Tournament.

Shihan Peter said he is extremely proud of his students.

"They have all trained hard and their dedication has paid off with the tremendous results they all achieved," he said.

Jay Iveli placed third in the 10/11 age group Kata and first in the 10yrs Sparring. Sam Hilton placed third in the 10yr Sparring. Eric Millgate experienced his first tournament and placed third in the 11yrs Sparring. Sempai Blake Ellis placed second in the 12 yrs Sparring. Patrick Fisher placed second in the 15yrs boys Sparring.

Sempai Jade Hilton placed first in the 15yrs girls sparring and third in the 14/15 years Kata.

Sempai Anissa Hilton placed third in the Ladies Veterans Kata and second in Ladies Veterans Sparring.

Sempai Shaun Budai placed second in the Mens Open Kata and third in the Mens Open Sparring. Shihan Peter Becroft placed third in the Mens Open Kata and third in the Mens Veterans Kata.

Shihan Peter said tournaments are not just about winning.

"They are about performing at the best possible level you can and being the best you can be," he said.

"Whilst a lot of our students placed, several of our students placed higher than they did last year.

"That is a fantastic result."

Shihan Peter said karate can teach focus, co-ordination, self-confidence, self-esteem, goal setting and self-belief.

"Karate is a personal journey about growing stronger every day and achieving things that you once thought you couldn't," he said.

"This is an important lesson to take into everyday life."
