The project to establish a new grass playing turf has been a major community effort and one which has unfolded over several months.

Kew Women's Bowling Club president Jenny Easy said the grass green will bring members on a level playing field when they compete in pennants.

The majority of clubs in the region have grass as their playing surface.

"It's great that we can now practice on this surface to prepare for competitions," Jenny said.

The grass will take a bit of adjustment for some players.

"A lot of these players have only played on a synthetic surface, which provides a faster playing surface," Jenny said.

The new grass green was first laid in January, thanks to the help of many volunteers from the bowling club who put in many hours to see it come to fruition.

Some volunteers gave time in excess of 100 hours to help establish the surface.

The event on Wednesday, June 12 saw many bowlers take to the green to try out their skills.

Members also helped fundraise for an additional club shed for extra storage space.
