It was obviously much harder to pull it down than to put it up, and for sure, in 1921, all that gear wasn't there when the Soldiers' Memorial was erected.
However, the municipal council workmen, under supervision of engineer Eric Grogan and Mick Roohan, have successfully accomplished a difficult task, for the memorial has been dismantled without damage.
The lettering is to be repainted and the memorial will be re-erected on a new site on the waterfront green.
Rotary is truly international
The international character of the Rotary club movement was well illustrated by District governor Mr Roger Dulhunty speaking at the Port Macquarie Club's Changeover Dinner at the golf club on Wednesday.
Referring to Rotary International's Conference at Honolulu last month, Mr Dulhunty said the 15,000 attendance included Rotarians from all over the world. Mr Dulhunty said at the conference stress was placed on the importance of young people in today's world.
Mr Dulhunty was greeted with enthusiasm when introduced as the first Hastings Rotarian to be elected District Governor. The 160 Rotarians and guests, representing five district clubs, stood and applauded.
One of the highlights of the function was a traditional Japanese dance performed by Japanese visitor Sayoko Camimura attired in national costume. Miss Camimura, who is the guest in Port Macquarie of Mr and Mrs Tod Roods, received quite an ovation at its conclusion.
A pleasant interlude on the lighter side was provided by Port Macquarie Players performance of Andy Rocles and the Lion. Mr Terry Gould played Andy Rocles and George Kerville was the lion.
Eleven Port Macquarie Club members, who achieved 100 per cent attendance throughout the year, had the thrill of receiving their souvenir spoons from the Miss Camimura.
Surf Club presentation dinner
It was a delightful evening on Thursday last, when about 200 people sat down to a delicious feast at the Port Macquarie RSL Club. The occasion brought to a close a very successful competitive season for the local surf club. Members were presented with their club championship awards for 1968-69. The function, held annually at the Surf Club Pavilion, was switched to the RSL in order to give the club's hardworking Women's Auxiliary members a well earned rest from the organising and catering which has prevented them from joining in the occasion over the past years.
As well as giving the surf auxiliary a rest, the comfort, amenities, service and ample parking area left nothing to be desired. All present were full of praise for the delightful three-course meal served by the RSL Women's Auxillary.
The generosity of the people of Port Macquarie cannot be measured, nor can words of thanks be sufficient, to express the gratitude of the Surf Club for the trophies for the presentation. The array of trophies was magnificent and recipients proud to accept them. As well as the 46 trophies, there were seven Bronze Medallions, two Instructor's Certificates and four Qualifying Certificates gained in 1968-69.
