Lake Cathie resident and Port City Hockey Club player Kim Maurer has been selected in the Over 60's state team after a 30 year break from the sport.

Kim said she was shocked she was chosen to play for the state team, as she has only just taken up the sport again.

"When I went down for the trials I didn't give them any sizing for the uniform, as I was certain I wouldn't be selected," she said.

Kim retired from hockey after the birth of her son Reis so that she could care for him, as he has cerebral palsy.

Kim said now that Reis has ongoing support through carers, it has enabled her to pursue her hobbies.

Kim is one of four women who have been selected to play in their respective state team divisions from the Port Macquarie Hastings Hockey Association.

Catherine Carroll (Camden Haven Hockey Club) has been chosen to play in the Over 35's team. Louise Oirbans (Thunder Hockey Club) will also play in the Over 35s state team. Lyn Dockrill (All Stars) will shadow for the Over 60's state team.

Kim's position on the field is goal keeper, a role which comes with added pressure.

"I like the pressure of it," Kim said.

"It feels good when you save a goal."

Kim admits sometimes her reflexes aren't fast enough to stop the goals but she said it's all part of the game.

During training Kim plays against kids who are three times younger than her, which she said is fantastic for her preparation.

Hockey has always been Kim's passion and she has enjoyed being involved in the Port City Hockey Club.

Kim will join the three other women from the region and play at nationals from Thursday, September 26 until Saturday, October 5 at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre.
