In the third week of finals, the Redbacks faced off against United, with the winner to progress through to the Grand Final, and the loser to be eliminated. The match was set to be a real battle, with each team having defeated the other once through the regular season, and both teams determined to make the Grand Final.
From the first whistle, it was clear that the match was going to showcase some great skill, with both teams pressing hard from the get-go. But it was United who were presented with the first real opportunity, after an unlucky handball in the box gifted the home side a penalty shot. The United striker made no mistake with her placement, and the Port side took an early 1-0 lead.
From there, the Redbacks appeared to be on the back foot, spending much of the time chasing United rather than controlling the play. United took advantage of their dominance, when at the twenty minute mark, a well place through ball found a fast-paced forward who was able to outrun the Redbacks defence, and carefully place the ball past the advancing Redbacks keeper, extending the United lead to 2-0.
At half-time, the mood was certainly sombre for the Redbacks.
"We knew we hadn't played our best football in that half," Captain Tamara Burns said after the game. "We were certainly up against it, but we resolved that if this was going to be our last game, then we were going to go out swinging, knowing that we'd given everything we could, and left everything out on the park."
The half-time break certainly seemed to help lift the mood of the Redbacks, and the team came back with vengeance in the second half. Both teams were much more evenly matched, with the Redbacks appearing to have more possession than the home side. But despite the possession and some strong defence, United remained dangerous, and around the half-time point of the second half, a shot from United across goals to the top far corner proved too good for the Redbacks keeper, and United extended their lead to 3-0.
The game appeared all but done, but the Redbacks refused to give up. Continually pressuring, Redbacks forward Erin Gunton found herself with some space out wide, and with a cracking shot from outside the box, was able to put the Redbacks on the board. United seemed a little shaken by the turn of events, and ten minutes later, a one-on-one with the keeper found Gunton once again with a golden opportunity, and making no mistake, the Redbacks were back in the match 3-2 with five minutes to go.
The final minutes of the match proved dangerous for United, and desperate for the Redbacks. Despite the pressure, the Redbacks were unable to find the final goal they needed, with the final score of 3-2 being enough for United to proceed through to the Grand Final and for the Redbacks to be eliminated.
The loss was a disappointment for the Redbacks, but not seen as a failure.
"We performed so well this season," Burns said after the match.
"The girls trained hard, worked hard, played hard. They gave 110 per cent and although today proved not to be our day, you couldn't ask for a better team to be a part of.
"I'm proud of how well we went this season, but more so, of how well we played as a team."
The loss marks the end of the senior season for the Redbacks, with First Grade also having been eliminated after a 2-0 loss to Port Saints. In the junior grades, the Club's Under 12's and Under 18 Girls will both be competing in a Grand Final, with locations and times to be confirmed.
