The volunteer wildlife organisation's president Meredith Ryan said natural food sources for many species of birds include nectar and insects.
However Ms Ryan said unfortunately use of certain insecticides and herbicides can harm some species.
"We want to alert the public to think carefully about their choice of insecticides and herbicides," she said.
"We urge them to choose wildlife friendly deterrents so harm to non-target species can be lessened."
FAWNA NSW do not encourage residents to put out food for birds, despite many people not taking heed to advice.
"The important thing is that if people insist on putting out food, honey, sugar and bread are absolutely no-nos," Ms Ryan said.
"People should visit their pet supply store and source the correct nectar, insect or seed mix for the birds that visit their garden.
"Food should not be left out every day.
"Any feed containers should be of washable and non-porous materials like glass, metal, hard plastic or glazed ceramic. They should be kept scrupulously clean and changed daily."
"Food should never be placed straight on the ground to avoid contamination by faeces."
Ms Ryan said the overriding recommendation is not to feed wildlife which creates dependency and competition among native species.
"It also leads to neighbourhood disputes," she said.
