The initiative is aimed engaging communities in making reusable 'Boomerang Bags' as a fun, sustainable alternative.
Organiser Peter Nash said each Boomerang Bag is handmade by volunteers from the local community using donated, second-hand materials, keeping the initiative local and sustainable.
"Bags can be made solo at home, with a group of friends or family, in the classroom, as a school or workplace activity, or at a public venue with the wider community," Mr Nash said.
"Regular sewing sessions provide a platform to engage with different demographics of the community in a positive environmental action, raise awareness about current sustainability issues, as well as encouraging community connectedness and socialisation.
"They also provide a hands-on learning environment, allowing volunteers, community groups and students to gain valuable practical skills."
Once made, Boomerang Bags can be distributed to local businesses and markets, boomerang'd to friends, family, colleagues or the bagless stranger in front of you at the supermarket, used to wrap presents in, or stashed in your car or handbag so that you're never caught without a re-useable bag when you need one!
"We relaunched boomerang Bags Camden Haven on October 8 after we received a grant from ETC for machines and a canopy for market," he said.
"We are auspiced by Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre and are encouraging people to come along to our working bees which are held every Tuesday.
"We hold regular working bees 8 am to 4 pm every Tuesday at 131 Ocean Drive Kew in the I Love Country workroom"
Mr Nash said they are registered as a Centrelink host, so for the people that have obligation for volunteering for their Centerlink payment, your hours volunteering will count towards your obligation.
"You don't have to be a sewer as there are many other job which include pinning, ironing, cutting and chatting and having fun.
"People can volunteer for half hour or come all day, there is no obligation."
