To this end, the Bonny Hills Progress Association in collaboration with Bonny Hills Rural Fire Service and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council are hosting a community information event to encourage bushfire preparedness on November 17.
Hosted at the Rainbow beach Reserve at Bonny Hills, the groups are coming together to help educate the community on steps they can take to ensure their safety when a fire starts.
The focus of the event will specifically look at how individuals and families discuss and develop a personal bushfire evacuation plan.
Those who come along will be able to take away a 'Things to Take' checklist created by Kathy Regan from the Bonny Hills Progress Association who collaborated with the RFS.
Bonny Hills Progress Association chair Roger Barlow said when the recent Lake Cathie threatened Bonny Hills it was "a bullet dodged".
"When we had the Lake Cathie fire come close to Bonny Hills at the end of October it was a strong reminder that everyone needs a plan," Mr Barlow said.
"We dodged a bullet because the wind was kind to us but next time we might not be so lucky. The fires that are burning around us at the moment are a timely reminder to get that plan together."
The event will be held between 10am and 1pm with all members of the community welcome to join.
