Nestled between two mountains Sean Gleeson and wife Jody Nelson-Gleeson say they were confident with their bushfire plan - until the unthinkable came.

They own a farm at Johns River and said up until yesterday they had been confident their bushfire survival plan would get them through.

"We are farm people, we know what it takes to be prepared for a fire and our bushfire survival plan is very in depth," Sean said.

"We were keeping up to date on all the latest fire conditions and making sure we stayed ahead of the fire's path.

"We have been through this before and so we made sure we were prepared. We never thought we would have to leave."

The pair left their home on November 12 for the Kendall Showground but say it was a last resort they didn't think they would have to follow.

"We had a plan, we were worried about the Johns River fire but had steps in place depending on what would unfold," Jody said.

"What we didn't plan for was fire fronts all around us and wind that was changing so rapidly.

"At the end of the day people and our animals are important and when it got really scary we decided to leave.

"We packed the animals because loss of life is not worth it. Being safe is more important."

Thankfully they were able to return home this morning (November 13) but the pair both know the threat is still in their minds.

"The fires aren't out and conditions look like they might get worse again before the fire goes out," Sean said.

"We will still have everything packed and with everything so dry you can never be too safe."
