The tiny rural community of Red Hill, near Telegraph Point, is breathing a sigh of relief with no loss of life or property so far, despite an out of control bushfire threatening the community for more than five days.

The Gum Scrub Fire has caused havoc for the community since last Friday (November 8). The out of control bushfire has burnt through 1669 hectares. It is currently at a Watch and Act alert level.

Red Hill resident Geoff Agnew praised the "massive community effort and firefighters".

"We didn't lose any homes or lives," he said.

"It was a wonderful community effort.

"There were people coming around with food and drink even."

He said the bushfire revealed the best in people.

"It is like a war zone you need a catastrophe to find out what you didn't know," he said.

"Australians really are wonderful."

Mr Agnew feared the wildlife didn't fare so well.

"The damage is horrendous," he said.

"We have lost all the wildlife.

"It is a disaster in terms of the wildlife."

While initially he was feeding kangaroos with Weet-Bix and sultanas he said they had now completely disappeared.

The community is still without power however Mr Agnew has been able to survive due to solar power at his property.

Red Hill is currently blocked off to the public but residents are able to go in and out.
