This is to prepare material for a new historical walk down our main street, Bold Street, to complement our existing historical walk in Laurie Street.
On our new walk we would like to explain the history of the names of the streets we cross.
Beginning at Ocean Drive and proceeding south we cross Castle Street, Tunis Street, Seymour Street, Laurie Street, Mill Street, Hanley Street and then we locate historic Rodger and Austral Streets, at the perimeter of the village.
We know that Laurie Street and Laurieton were named after Joseph Laurie, a founder of the village, and that Mill Street recognises one of the early timber mills in the village.
Rodger Street is named after John Storey Rodger who ran a general store and a sawmill in the early 1900s.
Hanley Street is clearly linked to Hanleys Point, but we need more information about the Hanley family.
In particular the present-day main street, Bold Street, is curious.
Perhaps, as one member playfully suggested, it was merely a request by a clerk that the name be written in BOLD type?
If any of your readers can enlighten us regarding Bold, Castle, Tunis, Seymour or Austral Streets, or any of the other street names in Laurieton, we would be grateful.
Information can be sent to Diane at the museum via email camdenhavenmuseum@yahoo.com.au.
Alternatively if you are in the area, please visit us at the museum at 58 Bold Street between 9am to 1pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
