A colossal $30,000 prize purse is on offer for the Tweed Heads Border Park Wauchope Challenge on Saturday, January 11.
The event has a staggering first prize reward of $20,000 with second place collecting a $5000, third receiving $2500 and every unplaced dog delivering $500.
Beechwood trainer Karl Miller said it is highly unusual to see a prize pool that high and trainers would travelling from far and wide for the race night.
"It's very rare. For non-TAB trainers that one win would keep you going for easily a year, maybe five years," he said.
"They once had a one million dollar race in Sydney and this would be similar to that. To be truthful it's unheard of and has never happened before."
Two qualifying heats for the event are being held on January 4. The main event night will feature 10 races and is scheduled from 7pm to 10pm on January 11.
Hastings River Greyhound Racing Club president Rex Nairn said he's never seen anything like this before and compared the event to the Melbourne Cup.
"There wouldn't be any non-TAB club in NSW this year running a race worth $20,000 for a winner. You'd struggle to find a race this big in NSW for 20 years," he said.
"Non-TAB races usually exist on what they can get and most fifth-grade races are worth $300 for the winner.
"The prize money is not usually there for those races. Even collecting $500 for last place on the night is a terrific deal really. We'll get some fairly good dogs I would think.
"We encourage people to come out and have a look because it will be a huge event for Wauchope. Tweed Heads Border Park have put up the $30,000 all up, with $20,000 for the winner.
"This is biggest first prize for any race we have had here ever, it's the Melbourne Cup of racing for us."
The race is a notable standout for the year and follows the Wauchope Cup worth $5000 on January 4, 2020.
