Local writer Kay Morrison and illustrator Elizabeth Kent will visit libraries across the Port Macquarie-Hastings to discuss their book, The Prickly Princess and the Pixies.
The book is based on the true discovery of a giant prickly stick insect and she becomes the central character in the story.
Mrs Morrison said Elizabeth Kent is her good friend. Both are passionate about the environment and all the animals, big and small, who live in it.
While Mrs Morrison has been a writer for many years, of plays and adult short stories, this is her first children's book which she said came together smoothly.
The whole process took two months from the commencement of writing until it was published.
As a former teacher and librarian, writing a children's book was something Mrs Morrison had always wanted to do.
She drew on ideas from her grandchildren to formulate the initial idea for the book.
"The book is dedicated to all grandchildren," Mrs Morrison said.
The book explores the journey of a giant prickly stick insect, as she endeavours to seek acceptance from others living in a beautiful garden.
"It is her search for belonging that makes this story so poignant. It highlights native flora and fauna found on the Mid North Coast," Mrs Morrison said.
On Wednesday, January 15 Kay and Liz will be at Port Macquarie Library from 10am. On Thursday, January 16 they will be at Wauchope Library at 10am and Laurieton Library at 2pm.
The women will share their backgrounds in writing and illustrating, their techniques and experiences.
Following the presentation there will be the opportunity for children to participate in reader's theatre and craft activities.
The book will be available for purchase for $12.
Meanwhile staff at the Port Macquarie Library are encouraging young people to join its Summer Reading Club (SRC).
