In every aspect, the toll is incredible and beyond anything seen before. In times like this, we need caring, intelligent leadership that does not just address the symptoms but also goes to the causes.
Instead, we are in a crazy situation with a prime minister who refuses to accept the need for strong action on climate change so as "not to wreck our economy".
Which economy is he talking about?
The economies of Gippsland, South Coast, Kangaroo Island, our own region? The huge cost of fire-fighting and repair to the national economy? Are these simply collateral damage, acceptable costs of protecting the coal and gas industries?
Just as crazy is a government that claims to be the champion of business while it discourages the renewables-based industries that will ensure future prosperity.
Instead, it remains hell-bent on protecting fossil industries that will ensure future impoverishment.
The terrible costs to our environment, communities and economy, and present and future generations, just don't matter.
