I write in support of Maggie Adkins and her criticism of the prime minister during the bushfire crisis. I would include the Gladys Berejiklian government as well. Both governments were aware of the forecast by scientists in 2008 that by 2020 Australia would experience hotter, drier summers with extreme catastrophic bushfires. This, of course, has happened.

Scientists related these extreme conditions to climate changes caused by the increasing rise of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. We can expect these conditions to continue.
In spite of knowing these facts the NSW government cut frontline jobs in national parks and increased land clearing in rural areas which encouraged the spread of fires. I think most Australians now accept that climate change is real, and, as Steve Bryson, CH Courier on January 15 noted, the world has experienced climate change before, but, it has taken thousands of years to happen. This time, it has taken less than 100 years, in fact, within a human life span. We need a prime minister to lead, not just react to this emergency.
Why don't we declare a war on bushfire? We could have a trained defence force as well as our revered volunteers fighting fires across the country. We could also have desalinated facilities all around teh coastline with underground pipes to inland towns and rivers. I would like our elected leaders to inspire us with innovative ideas to give hope for a better Australia.
